Forest School

Why is Forest School important?

Forest School sets learning in a different context for children where they can undertake a range of practical activities and carry out small achievable tasks. At Forest School, children can develop their team working skills and also learn to become more independent. Those who are unfamiliar with woodlands and green spaces can become more confident in using them and this can form the basis of a life-long relationship with natural spaces. During our sessions we will identify animals, insects and trees whilst also developing their own risk management whilst climbing and playing.

What do they need?

For all sessions during the Summer and Winter, children need to wear long sleeved tops and long trousers/leggings. This is to protect them from insect bites(ticks) and stings. Hanborough Pre School provide each child with waterproof coat and waterproof trousers. These can be used as a single layer on top of their clothes during the Summer months and as an outer later over their normal coats during the colder Winter months. These are not to be washed every week just rinsed in water with no detergent as this affects the waterproofing. They are not to be tumbled dried.

During Summer months and hot days they will need sun hats and suncream applied before each session and in Winter they will need a warm woolly hat and gloves-waterproof if possible (please make sure these are named).

Children are to wear wellies for this session. We have spare at Pre School if needed. Children to bring their Forest School kits in a named bag each Wednesday and place in the blue tub. Please also bring in a spare pair of clothes to change into if needed in their daily rucksacks.

When do we go to Forest School?

Children to go to Forest School every Wednesday afternoon 1-3pm. Rain or Shine 😊 If the weather is too cold or Windy, our Forest School Leader will make the decision either the night before or the morning of the session if it needs to change. We will keep you informed on the Parent’s Facebook page

Our allotment is a vital part of our Pre School. We visit here weekly and the children enjoy planting, growing and eating the produce they have cared for. We were really lucky in 2024 to have a group of volunteers who came and developed our area. The children enjoy our enclosed reading area, mud kitchen space and looking for life in our pond.
